Former NFL quarterback, a legendary figure in the sport, has passed away at the age of 77.

Greg Landry, the former quarterback and assistant coach for the Detroit Lions, passed away on Friday, as announced by the team. He was 77 years old. Landry distinguished himself as a quarterback in the NFL from 1968 to 1981, playing for the Lions and the then-Baltimore Colts. Following two seasons in the USFL, he made a brief return to the NFL, participating in one game with the Chicago Bears. Over the course of his NFL career, Landry accumulated 16,052 passing yards, achieving 98 touchdowns and 103 interceptions. Renowned as one of the premier running quarterbacks in the history of the league, he rushed for over 2,600 yards and scored 21 touchdowns. In 1976, he was honored with the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award. Landry returned to the Lions in 1995 as a quarterbacks coach and also served in assistant coaching roles with the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears, as well as at the collegiate level with the University of Illinois. A native of Nashua, New Hampshire, he was drafted into the NFL after leading the University of Massachusetts in passing for three consecutive seasons and being the team's leading rusher and scorer in 1965 and 1967. He was inducted into the UMass Hall of Fame in 1980.
