Several of the WNBA's veteran players have faced scrutiny for their treatment of the league's incoming rookies, but one standout athlete had a constructive exchange with a rookie following a competitive game on Saturday.
After defeating the Washington Mystics, Las Vegas Aces standout A'ja Wilson embraced Mystics newcomer Aaliyah Edwards and extended her best wishes. Wilson's colleague and fellow U.S. Olympian Chelsea Gray also approached Edwards post-game for a conversation. There is a possibility of Wilson, Edwards, and Gray crossing paths again in Paris in a few weeks. Both Aces stars are part of the United States national team, while Aaliyah Edwards has previously represented the Canadian national team.
Wilson has been intentional about welcoming rookies lately, as she had a meaningful interaction with Angel Reese after the Aces' most recent game against the Chicago Sky.
"We let her get away in some cases, so we can't really have that. She's too good in that area for us to let her get out. I think, in the grand scheme of things, it was a great competitive game," Wilson said after the Aces won 95-83 on Thursday. "We got some [things] that we can learn when it comes to guarding her and defeating her, but obviously, she held her own."
Wilson has proven to be the standout performer in the league this season, consistently delivering impressive statistics game after game. With leading averages in scoring (28.0 PPG), rebounding (11.3 per game), and blocks (2.4 per game) in the WNBA, she has solidified her position as a top contender for her third MVP title. As the Aces further establish themselves in the season with a complete and healthy lineup, Wilson is poised to maintain her status as a frontrunner while also inspiring the upcoming generation of players.
