Jarren Duran, the outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, did not depart from his inaugural MLB All-Star Game without recognition. The 27-year-old made a game-changing two-run home run during the fifth inning of the American League's 5-3 victory over the National League at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. This outstanding performance earned Duran the Ted Williams MVP accolade for the 94th annual Midsummer Classic.
Duran is the first Red Sox member to receive this recognition since J.D. Drew in 2008, and only the fifth player in franchise history to achieve this honor, joining Drew, Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, and Carl Yastrzemski, according to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.
“Honestly, I can’t really put it into words right now. I’m kind of overwhelmed with emotions,” Duran said after receiving the award on the FOX broadcast. “I’m just very thankful to be here and to represent the Red Sox is a big honor.”
Duran was substituted into the game during the top of the fifth inning in place of New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge and had an immediate impact in the bottom of the frame. He smashed a two-out home run 413 feet to right field off Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene, giving the American League the lead — this marked the end of a streak of five consecutive runs for that team. As per Baseball Reference, Duran became the youngest Red Sox player since Fred Lynn in 1979 to hit a home run in an All-Star Game. Duran grounded out in his only other at-bat of the game in the eighth inning, but his contribution had already been made by then.
