Missouri Eyes National Title Run in 2024-25 with Key Players Returning

After an impressive 11-2 season that concluded with a No. 8 ranking in the AP poll and a 14-3 victory over Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, Missouri football is gearing up for a national championship run in the 2024-25 season.

With many key players returning, head coach Eli Drinkwitz and his staff are focused on building on last season's success while staying grounded in the present.

“If you get caught patting yourself on the back for last year, you’re going to be disappointed,” Drinkwitz remarked in a February press conference. “Nobody here is sitting around staring at the Cotton Bowl trophy.”

The Tigers’ offense, which made significant strides last season under first-year coordinator Kirby Moore, will see much of its core return. Quarterback Brady Cook, who passed for over 3,000 yards, will be back, along with star wide receiver Luther Burden III entering his third season. Veteran receivers Theo Wease Jr. and Mookie Cooper, along with breakout freshman tight end Brett Norfleet, also return.

Despite the continuity in the passing game, the rushing attack faces uncertainty with the departure of last year’s SEC-leading rusher, Cody Schrader. The Tigers will likely look to transfers Marcus Carroll and Nate Noel to fill the void in the backfield.

On defense, Corey Batoon takes over as the new defensive coordinator following Blake Baker’s departure. The defense lost several key players to the NFL, including Darius Robinson, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Ty’Ron Hopper, Kris Abrams-Draine, and Jaylon Carlies. However, veterans Johnny Walker Jr., Chuck Hicks, and Tristan Newson return, and the team has bolstered its defense through the transfer portal with additions like former Clemson cornerback Toriano Pride Jr. and 5-star defensive line recruit Williams Nwaneri, who is expected to make an immediate impact.

As of June 11, Missouri is ranked No. 10 in ESPN’s 2024 Preseason Poll, but Drinkwitz remains focused on the future and taking it one step at a time.

“What matters is now, and the people who are here with the opportunities moving forward,” Drinkwitz emphasized. “In order to go further faster, you have to start over in laying the foundation.”

Mizzou will kick off its season at home against Murray State on August 29 at 7 p.m.
