Both TCU and Kansas achieved victories against their Big 12 Conference opponents over the weekend and will aim to maintain that momentum during their meeting on Wednesday night in Fort Worth, Texas. The Horned Frogs (10-7, 3-3 Big 12) rebounded from a midweek defeat to Utah by securing a thrilling 74-71 comeback win against then-No. 25 Baylor on Sunday in Waco, Texas. This marked TCU's first Quad 1 victory of the season, and they will have the opportunity to secure a second against the 12th-ranked Jayhawks (13-4, 4-2)
"I'm proud of our guys, we were healthy today," TCU coach Jamie Dixon said. "We had two good practices and we got it done on the glass. That was our mission and we got that done."
TCU exhibited a commanding performance against Baylor, out-rebounding them 41-25. As Coach Dixon noted, rebounding has become a key focus for the Frogs, who currently rank 14th in the Big 12 with an average of 35.0 combined team rebounds. Center Ernest Udeh Jr. delivered an outstanding performance on the boards, achieving a season-high of 15 rebounds against the Bears. Udeh, who began his collegiate career at Kansas, had only accumulated 12 rebounds in his previous three games. In terms of scoring, Udeh contributed 16 points to the Frogs' victory. Brendan Wenzel led all scorers with 17 points, including a crucial game-winning three-pointer. Following the game, Wenzel expressed that he is beginning to feel more like his former self after recovering from an ankle injury. "I’m definitely starting to feel like myself again," he remarked. "Night in and night out, I have to come in and do what I do. It doesn’t matter how many games or practices I miss; I have to come in and do my job. My job is to shoot the ball."
TCU's triumph over Baylor represented only the 39th victory in the program's history against an AP Top 25 opponent, with 24 of those victories occurring during Dixon's tenure. For Kansas, the focus remains on how the team can secure wins in the absence of forward KJ Adams, who is sidelined due to a shoulder injury sustained during the Jayhawks' defeat at Iowa State last week. Nevertheless, the team managed to bounce back with an 84-74 win over Kansas State on Saturday.
Freshman Flory Bidunga stepped into the starting lineup to replace Adams, while AJ Storr also experienced an increase in playing time. Bidunga recorded six points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes, while Storr contributed seven points in 17 minutes. KU head coach Bill Self remarked that there was "really no decision" regarding whether to start Bidunga or Storr in place of Adams. Statistically, our best team analytically... regardless of who is on the court, our optimal combination is Flory and Hunter (Dickinson) when considering points per possession offensively and points allowed defensively," Self stated.
Dickinson emerged as the key player against the Wildcats, scoring 25 points and grabbing eight rebounds, marking his fifth game of the season with at least 20 points.
Kansas maintains a significant advantage in the all-time series against TCU, leading 26-4, and has secured victories in four of the last five encounters.
