The 49ers surpassed the Broncos in their bid for Dre Greenlaw; however, the linebacker was looking for a 'fresh start.'

Multiple factors led to Dre Greenlaw's departure from the San Francisco 49ers this offseason. A major influence was financial, as the linebacker secured a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Denver Broncos. His exit is regarded as one of the most significant losses for the 49ers, who had aimed to keep him on the team.

"We've all witnessed how exceptional he is when healthy," general manager John Lynch shared with Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group earlier this month. "He’s a game-changer. We are truly thankful to Dre for all he contributed to the Niners. He’s a special player, and it’s tough to see talents like him go, but that’s part of the business. You can’t hold onto everyone."

The 49ers made a determined effort to retain Greenlaw. As reported by The Denver Post's Luca Evans, Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan traveled to Greenlaw's home in Texas in a "last-ditch effort" to keep him, even sweetening their offer (h/t Pro Football Talk).

"San Francisco ultimately outbid the Broncos, who were focused on Greenlaw to strengthen their defense," Evans noted. "However, the 49ers only made the trip and increased their offer after the Broncos had already pursued Greenlaw, according to sources."

By that time, Greenlaw had already made up his mind.

Other elements also played a role in his decision. Greenlaw recognized that the 49ers' offseason strategy involved letting several players go in free agency and parting ways with other key figures.

Evans pointed out: "As the 49ers moved on from numerous players in free agency, Greenlaw felt it was a chance for a 'fresh start' with a strong defense in Denver, as his agent J.R. Carroll informed The Post."

Star linebacker Fred Warner is one player who will feel Greenlaw's absence but supports his choice.

"It just felt different when he and I were attacking other teams from the second level, working to control the middle of the field," Warner told Evans. "He’s undoubtedly one of the best athletes and football players I’ve ever played with, and it was a true honor to share the field with him."
