The Colorado Rockies were thrilled to pick Charlie Condon as the No. 3 overall selection in the Major League Baseball Draft on Sunday. Nonetheless, the decision led to a considerable amount of debate. The final decision was only made an hour before the draft.
The Rockies chose Condon, the most highly drafted player in Georgia's history, over Florida's Jac Caglianone and Wake Forest's Nick Kurtz. Marc Gustafson, Colorado's senior director of scouting operations, stated to the Denver Post, "There were some extremely talented hitters at the top of the draft. We carefully analyzed all of their skills, making the decision quite challenging. It was almost like choosing between 1A and 1B, as we deliberated back and forth."
“But at the end of the day, our history, our scouts’ eyes, the multiple looks we had from a lot of different personnel, we just felt Charlie Condon was the pick for the Rockies.”
Kurtz was chosen by the A’s as the fourth pick, while Caglianone was selected by the Royals as the sixth pick. Ultimately, Condon was the chosen candidate.
“Selecting Caglianone was a difficult decision,” Gustafson informed the Post. “We deliberated until just an hour before the draft, and I assure you, this is the truth. We debated back and forth and held private discussions with (GM) Billy (Schmidt). In the end, someone had to come in second place, and we believed that (Condon) was the right choice.”
