Josh Harris, the owner of the Washington Commanders, expressed optimism on Sunday evening regarding the potential opening of a new stadium by the 2030 season. He remarked, “While it is impossible to pinpoint an exact date, I believe that is a reasonable goal,” prior to the team’s last preseason match. The Commanders' current lease at Commanders Field concludes in 2027; however, they have the option to continue playing there indefinitely.

Harris and his ownership group are particularly interested in the site of the RFK Stadium, located in downtown Washington, but the transfer of the land to the District of Columbia requires federal government approval.

The U.S. House of Representatives has already granted its approval, yet the Senate has yet to do so. Harris expressed hope that the Senate will take action during the lame-duck session following the November elections, emphasizing the unpredictability of outcomes with a new administration in place.

Additionally, Harris conveyed his aspiration to host the NFL draft in the region in 2027, ideally situated on the National Mall between the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. The team is collaborating with the NFL and the National Park Service to facilitate this event.
