Following a commanding 49-7 victory against the in-state rival Arizona Wildcats, the Arizona State Sun Devils faced a significant setback with the announcement that standout wide receiver Jordyn Tyson would require surgery for an undisclosed injury, effectively ending his season. In his second year with the Sun Devils, Tyson had an impressive performance, recording 75 receptions for 1,101 yards and ten touchdowns over 12 games, following a redshirt year. He not only served as the primary threat in the passing game but also excelled as a formidable blocker in the running game. As the team shifts its focus to running back Cam Skattebo, the Sun Devils will rely on three players to step up and fill Tyson's void as they aim for a Big 12 Championship.
Xavier Guillory enters the Big 12 Championship game riding a two-game touchdown streak. Despite being somewhat overlooked in the Sun Devils' offense this season, with only three games featuring more than one reception, Guillory has shown promise. After catching a 61-yard touchdown against BYU, he followed with two receptions for 41 yards and another touchdown against the Wildcats, indicating his potential for a breakout performance, especially after developing chemistry with quarterback Sam Leavitt. With Tyson sidelined, Guillory has an opportunity to mitigate the impact of this loss as the Sun Devils prepare to face Iowa State for a chance at the College Football Playoff.
Troy Omeire, who transferred to the Sun Devils from the Texas Longhorns last season, made a solid contribution in 2023 but has seen limited involvement in the offense this year, with only three receptions for 19 yards. However, the former three-star recruit is now moving up the depth chart and is expected to start in the position previously held by Tyson. Last season, he played in eight games, recording 20 catches for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Standing at 6'4", the senior will provide Leavitt with a significant target in the red zone and is anticipated to excel in run blocking as well.
